Master of Arts in Teaching (M.A.T.)

Focusing on teaching, scholarship, and service, the College of Education & Human Development offers both a Master of Arts in Teaching and a Master of Education.

The College of Education & Human Development's conceptual framework forms a foundation for innovative, interdisciplinary, and research-based curricula dedicated to the development of reflective practitioners who demonstrate expertise in knowledge and practice. The College of Education & Human Development at UL Lafayette was ranked among the country's best in the U.S. News & World Report's 2023 edition of "Best Graduate Schools."

The M.A.T. is appropriate only for individuals who do NOT hold any teaching certification. This program is designed for persons interested in acquiring initial teaching skills of students with mild/moderate disabilities at the elementary/secondary education levels along the special education continuum of placements.

Additional Application Materials

In addition to the general Graduate School Application Materials, you must also have:

  • Official GRE scores*
  • Official PRAXIS pre-professional basic skills test scores (Praxis Core) or official ACT or SAT scores
  • Official scores for the appropriate content area PRAXIS II tests (Elementary Content or Secondary Content)

Those applying to Elementary French Immersion concentration also must demonstrate an intermediate-high level of French proficiency by either (1) having earned a four-year, undergraduate bachelor's degree in French and/or Francophone Studies or (2) a score of B1 level on the European Framework exam (DELF)/Intermediate High on the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) Oral Proficiency Interview (OPI).

* For those applying to the Elementary Education concentration or the Elementary Education French Immersion concentration, a waiver of the GRE requirement for admission may be available. To be eligible, you must have an undergraduate GPA of at least 3.2 (on a 4.0 scale) and must submit an essay of at least 500 words that speaks to your potential as an elementary or elementary French immersion teacher. Those applying for the French immersion concentration are encouraged to write their essay in French. GRE scores are required for all applicants to the Elementary Education and Special Education Mild/Moderate Grades 1-5 concentration and the Secondary Education and Special Education Mild/Moderate Grades 6-12 concentration.

M.A.T students choosing the Elementary French Immersion concentration are eligible to apply for a Future Immersion Teacher (FIT) fellowship from the French Dual Language Fund, created in conjunction with the Fondation FACE and Les Services Culturels de l’Ambassade de France. FIT Fellows receive scholarships of up to $10,000 to prepare them for their roles as French immersion teachers.
