UL Lafayette is the state’s second largest university with more than 16,000 students, including 1,400 graduate students. It’s located in the heart of French Louisiana, which is known for its incredible Cajun and Creole cuisine, Cajun and Zydeco music, and lush, verdant landscapes.

The Graduate School has 26 master’s degrees, nine doctoral degrees, and three non-degree programs. For more information on these visit Graduate Programs.

Its faculty are chosen for their expertise as educators and penchant for research. That’s a powerful combination for students who are looking for enthusiastic, invigorating mentors in their fields of study.

UL Lafayette’s stature as a research university is evidenced by the prestigious Carnegie Foundation’s designation as a "Research University with High Research Activity."   • The Louisiana Immersive Technologies Center, a cutting-edge visualization environment;
  • National biological and environmental centers, such as the USGS National Wetlands Research Center and the Estuarine Habitats Coastal Fisheries Research Center; and
  • The Center for Louisiana Studies, which concentrates on the state’s history and cultures.

Is Graduate School right for you?
Should you go to graduate school? That's a question only you can answer; below are some considerations that may help you decide what path to take. If you're considering a graduate degree, contact us by email or phone. We'll put you in touch with a graduate school staff member or graduate coordinator who can provide more information and valuable guidance.

  • Graduate School is a place to go to satisfy your intellectual curiosity in a challenging academic environment.
  • Your research will contribute to a constantly expanding body of knowledge. That accomplishment can be a satisfying reward.
  • From a practical standpoint, career advancement and annual earnings often go hand in hand with graduate degrees. According to recent U.S. Census Bureau demographics, mean annual earnings for a person 25 or older who holds a bachelor's degree is $53,581; that mean amount rises to $67,361 for a master's and to $93,096 for a doctoral degree.
  • An advanced degree carries added prestige. That fact is significant because an advanced degree can open doors for you. It expands employment opportunities and can enable you to join some of the most respected professional organizations in the world.
  • Some professions require graduate degrees, such as teaching at the university level.
  • Timing is everything. The longer you stay away from a university, the less likely you are to make the commitment to earn an advanced degree.
  • Graduate education provides many avenues for intellectual and personal growth. Your association with respected professors, scholars and scientists may expand opportunities to publish your work, for example. And the discipline and self-confidence you'll gain in graduate school will help shape you as a person.
