Offering nine doctoral, 26 master's programs, and 3 non-degree programs, UL Lafayette has much to offer. Please contact the program of interest to you to learn more regarding the program and the specific admissions materials needed beyond the general graduate admissions materials.

Graduate Coordinators are graduate faculty within each graduate program who are a point of contact for graduate students, prospective and current. Other graduate faculty and department heads may also be available to assist students within various programs.
 

Ph.D. Programs

 
APPLIED LANGUAGE AND SPEECH SCIENCES (Ph.D.)
This doctoral program is designed to produce research professors for colleges and universities and/or researchers for schools, clinics, and hospitals. The program studies communication processes, language use and acquisition, communication disorders, and related areas. Applicants will normally hold the M.S. in Speech-Language Pathology and the CCC-SLP, but individuals with master's degrees in related areas and exceptional students with bachelor's degrees are welcomed.

BIOLOGY (M.S., Ph.D.)
This doctoral program emphasizes environmental and evolutionary biology. Training within this broad framework encompasses marine biology, ecology, molecular studies, and cell biology. Coursework and a dissertation lead to a Doctor of Philosophy opening doors for an academic career in teaching or independent research. The department offers facilities and equipment to support graduate research and works closely with several research laboratories and organizations.

COGNITIVE SCIENCE (Ph.D.)
The Institute of Cognitive Science at UL Lafayette is dedicated to research on cognition and its implications, such as language processing, learning, and adaptation. The Institute links research in a variety of university units and disciplines, including The Center for Advanced Computer Studies (CACS), the New Iberia Research Center (NIRC) and the departments of Biology, English (Linguistics), Mathematics, Philosophy, Psychology, and Communicative Disorders. It is the only program in the South granting the Doctor of Philosophy in Cognitive Science.

CACS makes its research laboratories and equipment available to students and maintains close working relationships with several research centers like the Center for Business and Information Technology (CBIT), Louisiana Immersive Technologies Enterprise (LITE), and UL NASA Regional Application Center (RAC).

Computer Engineering, Ph.D.
The Doctor of Philosophy in Computer Engineering is designed for persons who seek faculty positions in colleges and universities or who desire senior designer research, or development positions in industry, government, or universities. Computer Science, Ph.D.
The Doctor of Philosophy in Computer Science is designed for persons who seek faculty positions in colleges and universities or who desire senior designer research, or development positions in industry, government, or universities. ENGLISH (M.A., Ph.D.)
The Ph.D. program in English affords students close professional contact with and guidance from a diverse graduate faculty distinguished in its commitment to both teaching and research. All doctorates in English have a foundation in studies of British and American language and literature, thus students receive a broad education in the discipline that prepares them to teach effectively at any college level and provides the background for advanced research in their areas of particular expertise. Concentrations are available in Creative Writing, Folklore, Linguistics, or Rhetoric.

FRANCOPHONE STUDIES (M.A., Ph.D.)
The doctoral program in Francophone Studies is designed to provide a broad knowledge of the Francophone world, including France, Francophone Europe, Quebec, Acadia, Louisiana, the Antilles and Haiti, Sub-Saharan Africa, the Indian Ocean, the Maghreb, and the Mediterranean. The program offers a variety of approaches; literary, linguistic, critical, ethnographic, and historical. Courses offered through the departments of History, Sociology and Anthropology, and English (Folklore) complement those taught in the French and Francophone Studies program.

The Department of Mathematics offers the Doctor of Philosophy with concentrations in applied mathematics, pure mathematics, and statistics. Doctor of Education in Educational Leadership (M.Ed., Ed.D)
(Joint Program with Southeastern Louisiana University)
The Doctor of Education in Educational Leadership is designed to produce educational leaders with the knowledge and skills to enhance the leadership capacity in K-12 school systems as well as the state and federal educational departments. Several areas of concentration are available including educational leadership and management, instructional leadership, and a specialty area. This program is offered jointly by the University of Louisiana at Lafayette and Southeastern Louisiana University.

ARCHITECTURE (M.Arch.)
The Master of Architecture degree is a professional degree and meets the educational component to allow students to sit for the architectural licensing exam set forth by the National Council of Architectural Registrations Board (NCARB). The program is accredited by the National Architectural Accrediting Board (NAAB). The Master of Architecture is a minimum 48 credit hour degree, and students have the option of a Master Project or thesis.

BIOLOGY (M.S., Ph.D.)
The Master of Science in biology degree provides an introduction to research and can serve as the starting point for a number of career paths in teaching, research, government, and industry. The program is a minimum 30 credit hour program including a thesis. Much of the research effort in the Department of Biology is encompassed by the general areas of Marine Biology, Ecology and Evolution, and Cell and Molecular Biology. The department offers facilities and equipment to support graduate research.

BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION (M.B.A., H.C.A.)
The mission of the MBA program is to offer high-quality graduate education for students having varied educational and professional backgrounds. The program develops skills and knowledge necessary to progress in current positions, qualify for career changes, and progress in managerial and leadership positions in business and society.
 
MBA
The MBA degree consists of 33 semester hours, plus up to 15 hours of foundation courses depending upon the undergraduate business courses previously completed. There is no thesis required.
 
MBA, Health Care Administration
The MBA with a concentration in Health Care Administration (HCA) is designed for the professional in or seeking to get into health care administration. The program consists of 33 hours with 15 hours of business core and 18 hours of HCA courses. Two internships served within a health care organization are required and prepare students for industry. Fifteen hours of foundation courses may be expected depending upon the undergraduate business courses previously completed.

COMMUNICATION (M.S.)
The Master of Science in Communication program provides concentrations in Media Advertising, Interpersonal and Organizational Communication, Mass Communication (Journalism), and Public Relations. The department's professional programs are nationally accredited and offer a blend of general communication plus specialization in one of the four concentrations. Depending on one's goals and interests, both thesis and non-thesis options are available.

Computer Engineering, M.S.
The Master of Science in Computer Engineering is designed to prepare a person for a career in the computer design and application field. There are several areas of concentration available. The major prerequisite for the program is a Bachelor of Science in electrical or computer engineering; degrees in other areas may be required to do background work before entering graduate study. Computer Engineering offers both thesis and non-thesis (project) tracks earning a minimum of 30 and 33 hours respectively.

Computer Science, M.S.
The Master of Science in Computer Science is designed to prepare a person for a career in the computing field. There are several areas of concentration available. Knowledge of certain undergraduate computer science topics and computer-related mathematics is required; background work may be required for those with inadequate preparation in these areas. Computer Science offers both thesis and non-thesis tracks earning a minimum of 30 and 33 hours respectively.

COUNSELOR EDUCATION (M.S.)
The Counselor Education program, jointly administered by the College of Education, the College of Liberal Arts, and the Graduate School, is designed to prepare graduate students to assume roles as school counselors, community counselors, and vocational rehabilitation counselors offering concentrations in each of these three areas. The student who successfully completes the Master of Science in counselor education will have satisfied the education requirements for several state and national certifications and licenses. All concentrations include hands-on clinical experiences through a practicum and internship.

Focusing on teaching, scholarship, and service, the College of Education offers a Master of Education in three areas: Curriculum & Instruction, Gifted Education, and Educational Leadership. The College of Education's conceptual framework forms a foundation for innovative, interdisciplinary, and research-based curricula dedicated to the development of reflective practitioners who demonstrate expertise in knowledge and practice. All three Master of Education programs require applicants to possess a valid teaching certificate and evidence of one year of full-time teaching experience.

ENGINEERING (M.S.)
The Master of Science in Engineering options are designed to develop a capability of applying advance techniques to problem-solving in engineering. Core engineering courses coupled with courses in the selected disciplinary option develop a strong area of specialization.
 
Chemical Engineering (M.S.)
The Master of Science in Engineering, chemical option, offers concentrations in areas related to chemical and petroleum industries, with special interest in oil and gas production and materials. Advanced courses in transport phenomena, thermodynamics, corrosion, environmental engineering, process control, materials, and reactor design are available. The Department of Chemical Engineering offers both a 30 credit-hour thesis option and a 36 credit-hour non-thesis option.

Civil Engineering (M.S.)
The Master of Science in Engineering, civil option, offers concentrations in three major areas: structural analysis and design, environmental and hydraulic engineering, or transportation engineering. The Department of Civil Engineering offers both a 30 credit-hour thesis option and a 33 credit-hour non-thesis option.

Mechanical Engineering (M.S.)
The Master of Science in Engineering, mechanical option, provides a strong background in the machine sciences (manufacturing, robotics, vibrations, and computer controlled systems) and in the thermal-fluid sciences (heat transfer, fluid dynamics, thermodynamics, tribology and power plant engineering). The Department of Mechanical Engineering offers both a 30 credit-hour thesis option and a 36 credit-hour non-thesis option. The department has a number of fully equipped laboratories that support both instruction and ongoing research projects.

Petroleum Engineering (M.S.)
The Master of Science in Engineering, petroleum option, emphasizes applied and multi-disciplinary teamwork in instruction and in research and offers both a 30 credit-hour thesis option and a 36 credit-hour non-thesis option. The Petroleum Engineering program is accredited nationally by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of Accreditation Board of Engineering and Technology (ABET).

ENGLISH (M.A., Ph.D.)
The strength of the Master of Arts in English lies in its ability to address the professional needs of a variety of students: those who plan to continue in a Ph.D. program, those who want to teach at the high school or college levels, and those who wish to acquire professional training in writing or research. While pursuing a generalist background in literature, students also choose to focus on one of several options, including English and American Literature, American Culture, Creative Writing, ESOL, Folklore, Linguistics, or Rhetoric. Students may elect to focus on France exclusively or on the Francophone world, with France as a primary area, as well as Francophone Europe, Quebec, Acadia, Louisiana, the Antilles and Haiti, Sub-Saharan Africa, the Indian Ocean, the Maghreb, and the Mediterranean. Both thesis and non-thesis tracks are available. Prerequisite courses are required as well as oral and written proficiency in French.

GEOLOGY (M.S.)
The Master of Science in Geology prepares the student to enter the professional field or continue studies toward a more advanced degree. The following fields are emphasized in course work and research opportunities: Computer Applications, Environmental Geology, Geomagnetism, Geochemistry, Geophysics including 3D seismic visualization, Hydrology, Micropaleontology, Petroleum Geology, Petrology, Remote Sensing, Sedimentology, Stratigraphy, Structural Geology, and Volcanology. The program requires a minimum 30 credit hours and a thesis.

HISTORY (M.A.)
The Department of History and Geography offers broad fields of study as well as a vibrant and collegial academic community to its graduate students. The Master of Arts in history offers concentrations in four fields-European, Latin American, public, and United States history-as well as both thesis and non-thesis options. The Public History concentration also includes a hands-on internship and allows for an expanded public history project such as a museum exhibit, historic preservation plan, or oral history collection. The degree ranges from a minimum of 30 to 36 credit hours depending upon concentration and thesis option.

The degree of Master of Science with a major in mathematics is designed to advance the student's knowledge of applied mathematics, pure mathematics, and statistics, and to introduce the student to independent study and research. Completion should enable the student to pursue a more advanced degree, teach mathematics at the secondary or college level, or use mathematical techniques in a scientific or industrial environment. Both thesis and non-thesis options are available with a minimum of 30 and 36 hours respectively.

MUSIC (M.M.)
The Master of Music is designed to develop professional and scholarly competence in a wide range of artistic and cultural areas. Five concentration areas are available: performance, conducting, performance pedagogy, music theory and composition, and music education. Curricula are very flexible and may be customized according to each student's interests such as jazz performance and composition, chamber music, specialization in instrument families, media, or accompanying. The program is composed of a minimum of 30 credit hours and requires participation in one major ensemble each semester.

NURSING (M.S.N.)
The Master of Science in Nursing is offered through an affiliation with the Intercollegiate Consortium for a Master of Science in Nursing (ICMSN). The curriculum is designed to prepare advanced practice nurses in Adult Health or Adult Psychiatric Mental Health. The program also offers a Nurse Educator track that is designed to prepare nurses to teach in undergraduate nursing programs, and Nursing Leadership and Administration in Health Care track to prepare nurse managers and administrators.

PHYSICS (M.S.)
The Master of Science in Physics is designed to prepare scientists and engineers to enter various technical fields or assist them to improve their skills in their current employment. The program offers two general areas and several specialties: Applied Physics (environmental physics, ion beam analysis and modification, medical physics, instrumentation, materials science, acoustics, ultrasonics) and Computational Physics (physical acoustics, planetary science and astrophysics, geophysics, signal analysis). Both thesis and non-thesis tracks are available.

PSYCHOLOGY (M.S.)
The Master of Science in Psychology has various options available. The general experimental option (thesis required) is designed to prepare the student for a doctoral program, like the Ph.D. program in Cognitive Science. The applied option (thesis and non-thesis options available) offers students an advanced overview of the discipline as well as coursework directed at the research-based application of psychological principles in human services careers.

SPEECH PATHOLOGY & AUDIOLOGY (Communicative Disorders M.S.)
The Master of Science in Speech Pathology and Audiology is accredited by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA). It is a program of study that combines intensive clinical practice with academic work. After successfully completing the program one will have met the academic requirements for the ASHA Certificate of Clinical Competence in Speech-Language Pathology (CCC-SLP). The Clinic, well-known for its successful summer literacy project, recently received recognition from the Louisiana Scottish Rite Foundation, Inc., in the form of clinic funding and annual scholarships.

TELECOMMUNICATIONS (M.S.)
The Master of Science degree program in Telecommunications is designed to prepare individuals for careers in the telecommunications and computer communications and networks industry. Depending on the student's background and interests, the interdisciplinary program provides the necessary education for those involved with hardware and software providers, service providers, large user organizations, and government regulators. The program has a dual-track structure, one for those with a bachelor's degree in Engineering or Computer Science, and another for those with a bachelor's degree in other disciplines. Both thesis and non-thesis options are available.

Non-Degree Programs

Financial aid is not available for students in a non-degree program.
 
 
ENTRÉE
Entrée students are those admitted to a special non-degree program for those wishing to take graduate courses for personal or professional knowledge. Entrée students must possess a baccalaureate degree. Students enrolled in Entrée status can make no progress toward completion of a graduate degree while in Entrée. Courses in some departments are closed to Entrée students. No more than two courses taken in Entrée status may be applied toward a future graduate degree. The Entrée program should not be used to circumvent Graduate School admissions regulations.

MASTERS +30
Masters +30 is designed for persons already holding a Master's degree who wish to take graduate level work for personal or professional knowledge. Although open to all with a master's degree, this program is specifically designed for Louisiana educators, teachers, and administrators.

Special Non-Degree students are those admitted to the Graduate School for study not leading to a graduate degree. This non-degree program is rarely used and is determined on a case-by-case basis.
