The Graduate Council
GRAD Main > Graduate Council

Purpose: The Graduate Council is charged with establishing policies governing graduate education at the University. The policies are subject to approval by the Vice President for Academic Affairs, and must conform with policies and regulations of the University, the Board of Supervisors for the University of Louisiana System, the Board of Regents, and the State of Louisiana.

Policy matters within the jurisdiction of the Council include, but are not limited to:
  • Graduate Faculty Membership
  • Admission to and retention in graduate programs
  • Degree Requirements
  • Graduate Courses
  • Graduate Assistantships and Fellowships
The Council also hears appeals for admission or readmission to graduate programs and cases involving grade appeals.

The Graduate Council consists of seven faculty members elected by members of the graduate faculty according to academic areas for three year terms. Four members of the graduate faculty are appointed by the Vice President for Academic Affairs to provide balance and equity. Two graduate student representatives are selected by the Graduate Student Organization. The Dean of the Graduate School is an ex officio member. Deans are not eligible for membership on the Graduate Council.

At its final meeting of each academic year, the Council elects a Chairperson from among its continuing members to serve a term of one year beginning on the first day of the month following the election.

The Council normally meets on the second Tuesday of each month during the academic year. Other meetings of the Council may be called by its Chairperson, the Dean of the Graduate School, or the Vice President for Academic Affairs.

The Council may remove a member who misses two consecutive meetings of the Council. Replacements for elected members will be appointed by the Chairperson of the Council from the same program area.

Official actions and decisions must be approved by a majority present. Voting may be conducted by secret ballot if requested by any Council member or the Vice President for Academic Affairs.

The commitees appointed by the Graduate Council include:
  • Committee on Graduate Faculty
  • Curriculum Commitee
  • Fellowships Committee
  • Student Appeals Committee
  • Committee on Awards and Honorary Degrees
The Council may establish other ad hoc committees as apporpriate.
